The sixth edition of the International Book&Movie Festival CineLibri will take place in the interval October 18 – November 8 under the motto “Sentimental Education” in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo and other regional cities.

Being aware of the challenge facing us in the current situation, we could not deprive the audience of contact with “better cinema” – cinema that tells stories inspired by literary masterpieces. (We are developing a plan for conducting CineLibri in a crisis situation, if necessary.)

The choice of theme for this year’s edition is not accidental. Overcoming trials of any order cultivates feelings and builds up characters. In a sense, trials are a gift because they encourage us to rethink our values. Let’s take a closer look at ourselves and others. Let’s strike a sober-minded balance and restart our lives. And since the cause of CineLibri 2020 was born in line with the concept of the project #OutTo Yourself, in the official video of the festival you will see the faces of all those wonderful actors who presented excerpts from famous plays through the online platform Atrakcia.bg. Tens of thousands of cinema and theater fans believed in the meaning of this initiative. Contact with artists of such rank, especially in troubled times, is a clear sign of the irrevocable role of art – to elevate the spirit. The business in the person of the team of Philip Morris Bulgaria also responded in support of the project #OutTo Yourself.

The motto “Sentimental Education” is a direct reference to the novel of the same name by the world-famous French writer Gustave Flaubert. This autumn we will mark 140 years since the death of the author of “Madame Bovary” and 170 years since the death of Honore de Balzac, two of the most acclaimed and influential European writers of the 19th century. We will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of Charles Dickens, the most significant prose writer of the Victorian era. We envisage a special movie event, accompanied by selected music by Ludwig van Beethoven, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the birth of the genius German composer. In general, the program will be a homage to the classics, because the classics are an island of trust and faith – and a promise that life goes on!

The festival will offer an international feature film competition and a parallel film program of several modules, many glamorous film premieres, educational events, exciting meetings with world-class guests and many surprises. The traditional competition for a short film lasting up to 15 minutes, inspired by a literary work, regardless of its genre, is now open for applications. There will be a prize fund and a festive ceremony with screenings of the awarded short films. If you are ready, hurry up to submit your short film application within the deadline for EarlyBird candidates – June 5, 2020. The deadline for applications is August 19. Additional information about the competition and all deadlines can be found here: https://filmfreeway.com/CineLibriShortMovieContest

We believe that a really nice and emotional summer is ahead of us, as long as we are more strict and responsible to ourselves and the people around us. And in the autumn, we will release our feelings in order to celebrate the art that has the power to take us even through the most bitter reality, so that we can reach happily the other side of life!

CineLibri 2020 will be held with the support of the Sofia Culture Program, the National Culture Fund, the National Film Center, with the exclusive partnership of Vivacom and with the cooperation of UniCredit Bulbank. The festival is part of the Calendar of cultural events of Sofia Municipality for 2020.
