The French crime comedy “Mama Weed”, part of the selection of CineLibri 2020, enters the Bulgarian movie theaters on February 5th 2021. The film opened last year’s edition of the International Book & Movie Festival and captivated the audience with its fresh humor, social messages and superb acting.
MAMA WEED (France 2020), original title: LA DARONNE, 104 min., crime comedy directed by Jean-Paul Salome. The film is not recommended for persons aged under 12 years.
Written by Antoine Salomé and Jean-Paul Salomé, the script is based on the eponymous novel by Hannelore Cayre. The novel is on the New York Times list of “100 notable books of 2019” and was awarded the European Prize for Criminal Prose, as well as Grand Prix de Littérature Policière, the most prestigious French award for crime literature. The main role in the film is played by the iconic French actress Isabelle Huppert. Her partners are: Hippolyte Girardot, Liliane Rovère, Farida Ouchani, Iris Bry, Nadja Nguyen, Rebecca Marder and others.

The story centers around Patience Portefeux, an underpaid, overworked French-Arabic translator in charge of phone surveillance for a narcotics police unit. While her salary is poor, her eccentric mother is in hospital and requires appropriate care. When realizes that she knows the mother of one of the drug dealers, Patience decides to cover for him and gets herself more and more deeply involved in the world of drug trafficking. Soon, she is using her insider knowledge and police resources to build her own crime network and earns the name Mama Weed.

From February 5, 2021, “Mama Weed” will be part of the program of all art cinemas in the Bulgarian capital, incl. G-8 Cultural Center, Cinema House, Odeon Cinema, Vlaykova Cinema, Euro Cinema, as well as in Arena Cinema, Cine Grand Park Center Sofia, Cine Grand Sofia Ring Mall, Varna, Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo and Gabrovo.
